Use a similar technique to solve 4D, although you need to use the last letters of four words. 16A is a toughie: Notice “in odd places,” and you will find TABLE hidden in every other letter in a part of the clue. You will notice ON AIR, or “live!” running in reverse in the rest of the clue. At 7D, look for “excerpt” to indicate the hidden word, but also notice “coming up” that indicates a reversal (in a down entry, reading in an upward direction). There are some variations on a simple hidden word today. I had never seen this series before, and it’s really fun and informative. If you’re new to cryptic lingo, Deb Amlen recommended a set of explainers, available via this page, when she wrote about one of Mr. Each clue has a recognizable definition and an indicator, or wordplay-filled way to get to that definition. For me, it definitely loomed menacingly as a blank grid, but once I got a few letters down, everything solved very cleanly, with no loose ends. Gascoigne has also constructed a few daily grids for us, including an excellent Saturday puzzle in February that was decorated with lots of clever cryptic notes.
